The Onewheel
A Onewheel™ is a self-balancing electric skateboard designed for off-road and urban terrain. It features a large central wheel that provides stability and maneuverability, allowing riders to traverse various surfaces with ease. Onewheels are controlled by shifting body weight and leaning in the direction of travel. They have gained popularity among enthusiasts for their versatility and unique riding experience, blending aspects of skateboarding, snowboarding, and surfing into a single, exhilarating ride.

How To Ride A Onewheel™
-
Safety Gear: Before you begin, make sure you're wearing the proper safety gear, including a helmet, wrist guards, and knee pads. Safety should always be your top priority. Snag some gear HERE
-
Mounting: Begin by placing your rear foot on the rear footpad, followed by positioning your front foot comfortably on the front footpad. Shift your weight onto the front side until the board is level and activated.
-
Balancing: Once you're on the board, focus on maintaining your balance. Keep your knees slightly bent and your weight centered over the wheel. Use your arms for balance, and keep your posture relaxed.
-
Accelerating: To accelerate, lean forward slightly and apply pressure to the front footpad. Start with small movements until you get a feel for the board's responsiveness.
-
Braking: To slow down or stop, lean back slightly, so your board slows down.. (If your Onewheel™ is in Simple Stop, it will eventually deactivate if you continue to lean in the reverse direction.)
-
Turning: To turn, shift your weight to one side while leaning in that direction. Use your hips and shoulders to initiate the turn, and keep your movements smooth and controlled.
- Dismounting: There are two ways to dismount your Onewheel. The first method is a simple backward jump with both feet simultaneously off the board, resulting in the board stopping. The second method, known as the 'Heel Lift' technique, involves raising the heel of the foot covering the sensor to deactivate half of it, thus causing the board to disengage You can also check out our "Onewheel™ Heel Lift Tutorial" below.

Tires
When it comes to customizing your Onewheel for an optimal riding experience, footpads are just the beginning. While adjusting your footpad setup can enhance comfort and control, another crucial aspect to consider is the type of tire you're riding on. Swapping out the stock tire for one that aligns with your specific riding style and terrain preferences can elevate your Onewheel experience even further. Whether you're seeking enhanced traction for off-road adventures or a smoother ride for urban commutes, selecting the right tire can significantly impact your overall performance and enjoyment.
Soft Compounds
Soft compounds refer to tire materials with a lower durometer, meaning they are softer and more flexible. In the context of Onewheel riding, tires with soft compounds offer several benefits:
Enhanced Cushioning: Soft compounds provide greater shock absorption, resulting in a smoother and more comfortable ride. This is particularly beneficial when riding on rough or uneven terrain, as the tire can better absorb bumps and vibrations, reducing fatigue and discomfort for the rider.
Improved Grip: Soft compound tires often offer better traction, especially on surfaces like trails, gravel, or grass. The softer rubber can conform to the contours of the terrain, providing increased grip and stability, which is advantageous for riders who enjoy off-road adventures or aggressive carving.
Medium Compounds
Medium compound tires offer a balanced combination of properties between soft and hard compound tires, providing a middle ground in terms of durometer, flexibility, and performance characteristics.
Balanced Cushioning: Medium compound tires offer a moderate level of cushioning compared to soft compound tires. While they may not absorb shocks and vibrations as effectively as softer tires, they still provide a comfortable ride on various surfaces, striking a balance between comfort and responsiveness.
Versatile Grip: Medium compound tires typically offer a versatile grip that performs well on both paved and unpaved surfaces. While not as grippy as soft compound tires on loose or rough terrain, they still provide adequate traction for most riding conditions, including urban streets, bike paths, and light off-road trails.
Responsive Handling: Medium compound tires offer responsive handling and maneuverability, allowing riders to carve smoothly through turns and maintain control over their board. They strike a balance between the agility of soft compound tires and the stability of hard compound tires, making them suitable for riders who enjoy a mix of urban and off-road riding.
Durability: Medium compound tires often exhibit greater durability and longevity compared to softer tires, as they are less prone to wear and tear. This makes them a practical choice for riders who frequently commute or ride long distances and prioritize tire longevity.
Hard Compounds
When considering hard compound tires for your Onewheel, you're opting for a durable and stable choice that prioritizes longevity and efficiency without compromising on performance.
Longevity: Hard compound tires are known for their durability and longevity. The harder rubber material used in these tires is more resistant to wear and tear, making them ideal for riders who frequently ride on smooth, paved surfaces like city streets or bike paths. They tend to have a longer lifespan compared to softer tires
Efficiency: Due to their lower rolling resistance, hard compound tires can offer improved efficiency and range compared to softer tires. Riders may experience less frictional resistance when riding on smooth surfaces, allowing for longer rides and potentially extending battery life.
Reduced Deformation: The firmer rubber material used in hard compound tires resists deformation, maintaining its shape and integrity even under heavy loads or aggressive riding maneuvers
Treaded, Slick, and Hybrid
Slick - Also known as street tires or slicks, are designed with a smooth tread pattern, lacking the traditional grooves or treads found on off-road or all-terrain tires. These tires are specifically engineered for riding on paved surfaces such as roads, sidewalks, and bike paths.
Treaded - Offer enhanced traction and versatility across various terrains, making them suitable for riders who enjoy off-road adventures and exploring diverse environments.
Hybrid - Provide a versatile blend of characteristics from both slick and treaded tires, making them suitable for a wide range of riding environments and preferences.
